Frequently Asked Questions

Got a question about retaining walls, our products, or your project? We've answered the most common ones below. If you can't find what you're looking for, contact our team directly.

Products & Materials

What size concrete sleepers do I need?

For most residential retaining walls up to 1.2m in finished height, our 200x75mm concrete sleepers are the standard choice. For taller walls, walls with surcharge loads (driveways, structures above), or reactive clay soils, use our 200x100mm heavy duty sleepers. See our full guide: 75mm vs 100mm Concrete Sleepers.

What's the difference between C-Channel and H-Beam steel posts?

C-Channel PFC posts suit standard residential walls up to ~1.2m. H-Beam UC posts are required for taller walls, surcharge loads, or reactive soils. Read our full comparison: H-Beam vs C-Channel Steel Posts.

How long are your concrete sleepers?

All our concrete sleepers are 2000mm (2.0m) long and 200mm wide, available in 75mm and 100mm thickness.

What finishes are available?

We stock Charcoal, Woodgrain, and Smooth Finish concrete sleepers. Charcoal is our most popular finish for contemporary landscaping. Woodgrain suits traditional or bush settings. Smooth Finish is ideal for painting or rendering.

Do your products meet Australian Standards?

Yes. Our concrete sleepers comply with AS 3600 and AS 1379, with minimum 32MPa compressive strength. Steel posts comply with AS/NZS 3678 and AS 4100. See our Certifications page for full details.

Installation

How deep do steel posts need to be set?

As a general rule, embed posts to at least one-third of the total wall height below ground, with a minimum of 600mm for any wall. Taller walls or reactive soils may require deeper embedment — consult an engineer for walls over 1.2m. See our post embedment guide for full details.

How far apart should steel posts be spaced?

Standard post spacing is 1.8m–2.0m centres for residential walls. Reduce spacing for taller walls, heavier loads, or poor soil conditions. See our post spacing guide.

Do I need drainage behind my retaining wall?

Yes — always. Poor drainage is the number one cause of retaining wall failure. Install ag pipe, drainage gravel, and weep holes behind every wall. See our drainage guide and drainage kits.

Can I build a retaining wall myself?

Yes, for walls under 1m on accessible, stable sites. Concrete sleepers are heavy (~90kg each for 75mm) so you'll need at least two people. For walls over 1m, near boundaries, or on reactive soils, we recommend a licensed contractor. Find one through our Partner Installers directory.

Council Approval & Engineering

Do I need council approval for a retaining wall?

It depends on your state and wall height. Generally, walls under 600mm don't require approval; walls over 1m almost always do. See our state-by-state regulations guide and Engineering & Council Rules for full details.

When do I need an engineer?

An engineer's certificate is typically required for walls over 1m, walls near boundaries or structures, walls on reactive soils, or walls supporting surcharge loads. See our guide on how to get council approval.
