Retaining Walls Direct supplies concrete sleepers direct to Brisbane homeowners, landscapers, and licensed builders — delivered by crane truck across Brisbane metro, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay, and regional Queensland. Our sleepers are manufactured by QPro (Brendale QLD) — a Queensland manufacturer — which means shorter freight distances, consistent local supply, and products designed for Queensland site conditions.
All sleepers are manufactured to AS 3600 and AS 1379 with batch-certified compressive strength. Current pricing shown live on each product page.
Brisbane’s site conditions vary significantly by suburb. Getting the grade right before you order prevents the most common and expensive failure mode: under-specification on reactive soil.
| Brisbane area | Typical soil | Recommended grade |
|---|---|---|
| Inner Brisbane (New Farm, Paddington, Ashgrove, Indooroopilly) | Residual basalt and Quaternary clay | 40MPa standard to 1.0m |
| South side (Sunnybank, Acacia Ridge, Rocklea, Moorooka) | Oxley Creek alluvial clay — reactive | 50MPa recommended |
| Western suburbs (Ipswich corridor, Springfield, Goodna) | Ipswich Coal Measures — expansive | 50MPa essential, engineer required |
| Northern suburbs (North Lakes, Strathpine, Redcliffe) | Sandy coastal and silty loam | 40MPa — confirm drainage |
| Eastern suburbs (Capalaba, Cleveland, Redlands) | Sandy coastal with some alluvial clay | 40MPa standard |
| Moreton Bay (Caboolture to Morayfield) | Acid sulfate soils near waterways | 50MPa or higher, engineer required |
| Outer west (Toowoomba, Lockyer Valley) | Black cracking clays | 50MPa minimum, engineer required |
| Gold Coast coastal and Hinterland | Sandy coastal and steep basalt hinterland | 40MPa coastal; 50MPa hinterland |
Brisbane’s subtropical climate delivers intense rainfall — often 100–200mm in a single storm event during the January–March wet season. This places enormous hydrostatic pressure behind retaining walls that lack adequate drainage. The most common cause of retaining wall failure in Queensland is not under-specification of the sleeper grade — it is absent or blocked drainage.
Every Brisbane retaining wall must include: 100mm slotted ag pipe behind the wall base, 20mm drainage aggregate between the ag pipe and the sleeper face, geotextile fabric separating aggregate from retained soil, and a legal stormwater outlet. We supply complete drainage kits sized for your wall dimensions.
Under the Building Act 1975, retaining walls over 1.0m require a Building Approval from a private building certifier or council. Brisbane City Council generally applies a 1.0m threshold, but Moreton Bay Regional Council applies lower thresholds in some precincts. Always confirm with your specific council before starting work. See our full council approval guide.
Walls over 1.0m require structural engineering certification under AS 4678:2002 Earth Retaining Structures. Any wall with a driveway or vehicle area above it requires engineering at any height.
The most popular OSV finish in Queensland is the McLaren range — a warm grey with subtle texture that coordinates with Queensland’s timber and rendered façade palette. Charcoal smooth is growing rapidly in Brisbane’s newer estates (Springfield, North Lakes, Coomera) where contemporary landscaping dominates. All finishes carry the same structural specification — only the aesthetics differ.
