Weep Holes for Retaining Walls

Weep Holes for Retaining Walls — Why They're Essential and How to Install Them

Weep holes are one of the most critical and most overlooked components of a concrete sleeper retaining wall. Without adequate drainage relief, hydrostatic pressure builds up behind the wall after rain — placing enormous lateral force on sleepers and posts that they were never designed to resist. Over time, this causes walls to lean, crack, and ultimately fail. Weep holes prevent this by allowing water to escape through the wall face at regular intervals.

Weep Hole Placement Guidelines

  • Install weep holes at the base of every wall course that sits below finished ground level on the retained side
  • Space weep holes at maximum 1.0m centres horizontally along the wall base
  • Pair with ag pipe drainage and geotextile fabric behind the wall for a complete drainage system
  • In high-rainfall areas or clay soils, consider additional weep holes at mid-height on taller walls

Weep holes alone are not sufficient — they must be part of a complete drainage system including ag pipe, gravel backfill, and geotextile fabric. Read our Weep Holes Guide and Complete Drainage Guide for full installation detail.
