Geotextile Fabric & Wall Liners

Geotextile Fabric & Wall Liners for Retaining Walls

Geotextile fabric is one of the most underrated components in a retaining wall system — and one of the most important. It's the barrier between your drainage gravel and the native soil behind the wall, and without it, fine soil particles migrate into the drainage zone over time, blocking the ag pipe and rendering your drainage system useless.

A wall with blocked drainage is a wall under increasing hydrostatic pressure. Geotextile fabric prevents that from happening.

What Does Geotextile Fabric Do?

Geotextile filter fabric allows water to pass through freely while blocking soil particles from migrating into the drainage aggregate. It's installed between the native soil and the drainage gravel zone behind the wall, and is also used to wrap ag pipe to prevent silt ingress into the pipe itself.

Wall liners serve a similar purpose at the face of the wall — protecting the back of sleepers from direct soil contact and helping to manage moisture at the wall face.

Where Geotextile Fabric Is Used in a Retaining Wall

  • Behind the drainage gravel zone — lining the excavated face of the soil before backfilling with drainage aggregate, preventing soil migration into the gravel over time
  • Wrapping ag pipe — a geotextile sock around the ag pipe prevents fine particles from entering and blocking the pipe
  • At the wall face — wall liners protect the back of concrete sleepers from direct soil and moisture contact

Works With Your Drainage System

Geotextile fabric works as part of a complete drainage system alongside ag pipe, weep holes, and drainage kits. These components work together — specifying one without the others leaves gaps in your drainage design.
