All posts are supplied in standard lengths to suit standard embedment depths. For walls over 1m, near boundaries, or carrying surcharge loads, post sizing must be confirmed by a qualified structural engineer. H-Beam vs C-Channel — Which Profile?

H-beam (UC) posts are the standard choice for most retaining walls, giving maximum resistance to lateral soil pressure — use them for any wall over 600mm, reactive clay sites, or surcharge loads. C-channel (PFC) posts suit lower walls under 600mm, fencing, and as end or corner posts on lightweight walls. For the full comparison, see our H-Beam vs C-Channel guide.

Corner, joiner and end posts are available in 90° and 45° return configurations for wall junctions, step-downs and returns. Always include end posts in your post count — two per straight run, plus one per corner or return.

Galvanising Specification

All posts are hot-dip galvanised to AS/NZS 4680 — a minimum 600g/m² zinc coating on structural sections. This is the correct specification for in-ground use in Australian conditions, including:

  • Reactive clay soils (Melbourne western suburbs, Brisbane outer west, Sydney western suburbs) — where cyclic wet-dry movement accelerates corrosion of unprotected steel
  • Coastal sites (within 1km of breaking surf) — where salt air demands maximum zinc coverage. For extreme coastal exposure within 100–200m of surf, contact us for advice on additional protective coatings
  • High-moisture sites — including low-lying areas, sites with high water tables, or walls with inadequate drainage

Do not substitute zinc-plated or galvanised-after-fabrication posts for hot-dip galvanised in retaining wall applications — the coating weight is insufficient for in-ground use.

Drainage — What Goes Behind Every Post and Sleeper Wall

A steel post retaining wall without correct drainage behind it will fail, regardless of post series. Hydrostatic pressure from trapped water is the leading cause of retaining wall failure in Australia. Every wall needs:

  • 100mm slotted ag pipe at footing level, laid to fall to a legal discharge point
  • Geotextile fabric separating the drainage aggregate from retained soil
  • Minimum 300mm wide zone of 20mm free-draining aggregate behind the wall face
  • Weep holes at the base of the wall at 1.2m centres for emergency pressure relief

What Size Steel Post Do I Need for My Retaining Wall?

Post size depends on wall height, soil type, post spacing and any surcharge loads. As a general guide: 100 Series suits walls up to 800mm; 150 Series suits walls up to 1.2–1.5m; 200 Series suits walls up to 2m or in difficult conditions. How Deep Should I Set My Steel Retaining Wall Posts?

A common starting guide is one-third of total post length in the ground — so a 1.8m post has approximately 600mm below grade. Actual embedment depends on wall height, soil conditions and engineer recommendations. In reactive clay or where surcharge loads apply, deeper embedment and larger concrete footings are required. Are Galvanised Steel Posts Suitable for Coastal Areas?

All posts are hot-dip galvanised to AS/NZS 4680, providing excellent corrosion protection in most Australian environments including coastal areas. What Concrete Sleeper Sizes Are Compatible With Each Post Series?

100 Series posts accept 200 × 75mm concrete sleepers. 150 Series posts accept both 200 × 75mm and 200 × 100mm sleepers. 200 Series posts accept 200 × 100mm heavy-duty sleepers. Do I Need a Permit or Engineering for a Steel Post Retaining Wall?

Walls under 600mm–1000mm in most states are typically exempt from a building permit, though boundary and easement rules still apply. Walls over 1000mm generally require a permit and engineer-certified drawings. Walls near boundaries, driveways, pools or with surcharge loads may require engineering regardless of height.
