The Gold Coast's geology splits into four distinct zones — each with different soil classification, approval requirements, and specification. No other Queensland city has this level of variation within a single metro area.

  • Coastal strip (Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Mermaid Beach, Palm Beach, Currumbin, Coolangatta): Quaternary coastal sands and sandy loams — lower clay reactivity but high water table near the shore. 50MPa recommended throughout; drainage critical near canals and tidal zones.
  • Canal estates and waterfront (Runaway Bay, Biggera Waters, Labrador, Paradise Point, Sanctuary Cove, Hope Island): Permanently high water table with tidal influence. Acid sulfate soils — the Gold Coast issue no competitor mentions

Acid sulfate soils (ASS) are estuarine sediments that release sulfuric acid when disturbed during excavation. On the Gold Coast, they are most commonly found in canal estates, low-lying coastal areas, and former tidal wetlands — the very areas where retaining walls are most frequently built. When acid sulfate soils are present:

  • Excavation and earthworks may require a mandatory ASS assessment and management plan before work begins
  • Sulfuric acid released during excavation can attack concrete and corrode steel — affecting both sleeper and post specification
  • Post galvanising specification may need to be increased beyond standard AS 4680 for severe ASS sites

Drainage for Gold Coast retaining walls

Gold Coast (QLD jurisdiction) — under the Building Act 1975 (QLD) and Gold Coast City Plan 2016:
