How the woodgrain finish is made — and why it doesn't fade

The woodgrain texture is not painted, printed, or applied to the surface after the sleeper is cast. It is formed during manufacture using rubber or polyurethane mould liners with a timber-grain pattern embedded in their face — often taken from real hardwood to capture authentic, irregular grain rather than a repeating pattern.

When fresh concrete is poured into the mould, it flows into every groove and detail of the mould liner. As the concrete cures, the grain, knots and texture become part of the concrete's surface structure. The finish is the concrete itself — which is why it doesn't peel, wear off, fade in UV, or require any treatment over the life of the wall. The appearance on day one is the appearance in year 30.
