Galvanised Steel H Post with Reo | 100UC

The Galvanised Steel H Post with Reo is a reinforced 100UC retaining wall post designed for concrete sleeper retaining wall systems where easier installation, reliable footing strength, and reduced steel weight are important. This post combines a hot-dip galvanised H post with welded reo reinforcement at the base, helping create a strong concrete pier connection while keeping the post easier to handle and install on site.

Unlike a standard full-length H post that extends deep into the footing, the H Post with Reo uses welded reinforcement below the post section. This allows the post to be installed with the correct back lean without the steel section striking the side of the borehole, while still providing reinforced support where the footing strength is needed most.

Available Wall Height Options

Galvanised H Posts with Reo are measured according to the intended retaining wall height, rather than the total overall post length. The welded reo section extends below the H post section and is embedded into the concrete pier to provide footing reinforcement.

Wall Height Option Typical Use
For 400mm wall Low garden edging, shallow retaining walls, small landscape walls, and raised garden bed applications.
For 600mm wall Low residential retaining walls, garden beds, and small boundary wall sections.
For 800mm wall Common residential landscape walls where easier post handling and reinforced footing support are required.
For 1000mm wall Standard 1.0m retaining walls, boundary retaining walls, and garden terrace applications.
For 1200mm wall Medium retaining walls where stronger footing reinforcement and correct back lean are important.
For 1400mm wall Medium-height concrete sleeper retaining walls, stepped sites, and walls with more demanding installation conditions.
For 1600mm wall Higher residential retaining walls requiring reinforced post support and accurate footing installation.
For 1800mm wall Taller concrete sleeper retaining walls where installation accuracy, post alignment, and footing strength are critical.
For 2000mm wall Maximum listed wall height option for reinforced H post applications, subject to engineering, footing design, drainage, and site conditions.

Technical Overview

The H Post with Reo is designed to reduce post weight while maintaining strength in the footing zone. Instead of using a full steel H section deep into the borehole, the post includes welded reo reinforcement below the galvanised H section. This reinforced base is embedded into the concrete pier, helping provide strength where the post transfers retaining wall loads into the footing.

The system is designed to make installation easier because the post can be set with the correct back lean without the full steel section hitting the side of the borehole. This can be especially useful on tighter sites, deeper holes, stepped retaining walls, or projects where post alignment needs to be adjusted accurately before concrete is poured.

How the Reo Base Works

The reo reinforcement is welded to the base of the H post and extends into the concrete pier. The welded reo section helps strengthen the footing connection while reducing the amount of full-section steel required below ground. This can make the post easier to handle, easier to position, and more practical to install while still supporting a strong retaining wall system.

The reo section can also be adjusted on site, giving installers more flexibility when working with varying ground levels, footing depths, and borehole conditions. Final cutting, positioning, and installation should always follow the engineering requirements for the retaining wall.

Benefits of H Posts with Reo

  • Lighter to handle: Reduced steel section below ground makes the post easier to move, position, and install.
  • Easier back lean setup: The post can be installed with correct back lean without the full H section hitting the side of the borehole.
  • Reinforced footing zone: Welded reo extends into the concrete pier to support strength in the area where the post transfers load.
  • Adjustable reinforcement length: Reo length can be adjusted on site to suit footing depth and installation conditions.
  • Pre-drilled for brackets: Supplied with pre-drilled holes for compatible fence bracket installation.
  • Location lug included: A location lug helps improve post positioning accuracy and ease of installation.
  • Reduced steel without reducing wall strength: The design reduces unnecessary full-section steel below ground while keeping reinforcement where it matters.

Reo Reinforcement Details

Each H Post with Reo is engineered with welded reo reinforcement at the base of the H post. The reinforcement design includes front and rear reo bars welded to the post with a minimum welded overlap to improve strength in the footing area.

This design helps create a strong connection between the galvanised H post and the concrete pier, while also improving installation efficiency compared with heavier full-length steel post options.

When to Use H Posts with Reo

  • Concrete sleeper retaining walls: Suitable for retaining wall systems using compatible concrete sleepers and steel post layouts.
  • Projects requiring easier handling: Useful where full-length steel posts are heavy or difficult to position.
  • Back-lean installations: Suitable where correct post lean must be achieved without interference inside the borehole.
  • Stepped wall layouts: Useful for retaining walls with varying levels where installation flexibility is needed.
  • Fence-over-wall applications: Pre-drilled holes can assist with compatible fence bracket installation.
  • Engineer-specified walls: Use where the retaining wall design allows or specifies reinforced H posts with reo.

Installation Considerations

Correct installation is critical for retaining wall performance. H Posts with Reo should be set plumb or to the required back lean, aligned accurately, spaced to suit the selected concrete sleeper length, and embedded into correctly sized concrete piers.

Post holes must be drilled to the correct depth and diameter for the wall height, soil type, surcharge load, and engineering requirements. The reo reinforcement must be fully embedded into the concrete footing, and the post should be held securely in position while the concrete cures.

Drainage should always be installed behind the retaining wall to reduce hydrostatic pressure. A typical drainage system includes free-draining aggregate, geotextile fabric, and slotted agricultural pipe at the base of the wall discharging to a legal outlet. Poor drainage can increase loading on the wall and may lead to movement, leaning, cracking, or structural failure.

H Post with Reo vs Standard H Post

A standard galvanised H post uses the full steel H section through the retained wall height and into the footing. An H Post with Reo uses the H section above the footing zone, with welded reo reinforcement extending down into the concrete pier. This can reduce post weight, improve handling, and make installation easier while still reinforcing the footing connection.

Standard H posts may still be preferred where the engineering design requires a full steel section into the footing. H Posts with Reo may be preferred where the system has been engineered for a reinforced reo base and easier installation is a priority.
