With many years of hands-on retaining wall construction experience across Australia, Retaining Walls Direct supplies engineered concrete sleepers, galvanised steel H-beam posts, drainage kits, and complete retaining wall kits — direct to your site, no middlemen, no markups.
Every product meets or exceeds AS 4678-2002 Earth-Retaining Structures and is engineered for Australia's diverse soil conditions — from reactive Class M and H clays in Western Sydney and Brisbane, to sandy loams in Perth, and coastal soils across Queensland. Whether you're a licensed builder, landscaper, or a homeowner tackling a DIY retaining wall project, we have the right system for your site and budget.
Choosing the wrong post size or sleeper grade is the most common — and most expensive — mistake in retaining wall construction. Here's our rule of thumb:
In many years of building retaining walls across Australia, inadequate drainage is the single biggest cause of wall failure — not the sleepers, not the posts. Every wall must include a 100mm slotted ag pipe wrapped in geotextile sock, laid at the base of the footing on a 50mm gravel bed, and daylighted at each end of the wall. Our drainage kits are pre-sized to your wall length so you order exactly what you need.
How much does a concrete sleeper retaining wall cost in Australia?
A standard concrete sleeper retaining wall costs approximately $250–$450 per lineal metre for materials (sleepers, posts, drainage), depending on wall height and sleeper grade. Installation by a licensed contractor adds $150–$350 per lineal metre. DIY installation significantly reduces labour costs. Contact us for a free materials quote.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Australia?
In most Australian states, retaining walls over 1m in height require a building permit and, in many cases, engineer certification. Walls over 1.5m almost universally require engineering. Requirements vary by council — always check with your local authority before starting.
What is the best concrete sleeper for a retaining wall?
For residential walls up to 1m, 40MPa sleepers are suitable in most soil conditions. For walls 1–1.5m or in reactive clay soils, 50MPa is the minimum. For walls over 1.5m or highly reactive soils (Class H2), 60MPa sleepers are required.
How deep should steel posts be set for a concrete sleeper retaining wall?
As a general rule, posts should be embedded to a depth equal to one-third of the total wall height above ground, with a minimum of 600mm in stable soils and 900mm in reactive or loose soils. For walls over 1m, always consult a structural engineer — post depth is a critical safety factor.
Can I build a retaining wall myself in Australia?
Yes — DIY retaining walls are legal in most states for walls under 1m that don't require a permit. Our complete wall kits are designed for DIY installation and include everything you need. For walls over 1m, we strongly recommend engaging a licensed builder or landscaper and obtaining the required permits.
