Concrete Sleeper Buying Guide Australia 2026
Choosing the right concrete sleeper comes down to four decisions: strength (MPa rating), thickness (75mm or 100mm), finish (charcoal, woodgrain, smooth, stackstone), and length. Get these right and your wall will perform for decades. Get them wrong and you'll be rebuilding within years. This guide covers each decision with the same advice we give trade customers who've been building retaining walls for 30+ years.
Step 1 — Choose the Right MPa Rating
MPa (megapascals) is the compressive strength of the concrete. Higher MPa = stronger sleeper = more resistance to bending, cracking, and long-term degradation.
- Suitable for walls up to 1.0m in stable, well-drained soils (sandy loam, compacted fill)
- Not recommended for reactive clay soils or walls over 1.0m
- Most cost-effective entry point for straightforward garden and boundary walls
- Recommended for reactive clay soils — common across Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth eastern suburbs
- Suitable for walls over 1.0m where 40MPa is insufficient
- Higher bending strength reduces risk of cracking under lateral soil pressure
- Maximum strength specification — engineered for tall walls, high surcharge loads, and demanding soil conditions
- Preferred specification for Canberra (freeze-thaw cycling), coastal sites (salt exposure), and civil applications
- Available in premium decorative finishes including Lonsdale, Blackwood, Ashwood, Hampton, Kensington, McLaren, and Stackstone
Step 2 — Choose the Right Thickness
-
75mm sleepers — standard residential thickness; 14 courses per 1.0m of wall height; lighter and easier to handle for DIY installation
-
100mm sleepers — heavy duty thickness; 10 courses per 1.0m of wall height; significantly higher bending strength; recommended for walls over 1.0m and reactive clay sites
Step 3 — Choose Your Finish
-
Charcoal — dark grey, contemporary; suits modern landscaping and urban gardens
-
Woodgrain — timber-look texture; suits natural garden settings and traditional landscapes
-
Smooth — clean, flat face; suits rendered or painted finishes and minimalist designs
-
Stackstone / Rockface — textured stone appearance; suits natural bush settings and feature walls
-
Block-face — masonry block appearance; suits traditional brick and block construction styles
Step 4 — Standard Lengths & Quantities
Standard concrete sleepers are 2000mm (2.0m) long. To estimate quantities, see our Material Estimator. For a precise quote with delivery cost to your site, contact us.
Pair With the Right Steel Posts
Concrete sleepers must be paired with correctly sized steel posts. See our Steel Post Sizing Guide or browse our full Steel Posts range.
