Arizona Block-Face Concrete Sleepers

The Arizona block-face is the sleeper we recommend when the wall needs to do two jobs at once — hold the ground and look like it belongs there. The deeply textured face replicates the irregular surface of hand-cut sandstone or dry-stacked fieldstone, giving your retaining wall the visual weight and character of natural stone without the cost, the cracking, or the ongoing maintenance that comes with it.

After 40+ years of building and supplying retaining walls across Australia, we've seen what happens when homeowners choose the wrong sleeper for the wrong site. The Arizona is a premium finish — it deserves the right specification behind it. That means the right MPa grade for your soil, the right post series for your wall height, and the right drainage system behind every course. We'll help you get all three right before you order.

Specifications

  • Finish: Arizona block-face — deeply textured, irregular cut-stone profile
  • Dimensions: 1800mm, 2000mm, and 2400mm lengths × 200mm wide × 80mm or 100mm thick
  • Strength grades: 40MPa standard | 50MPa heavy duty
  • Reinforcement: Steel reinforced throughout
  • Compliance: AS 4678-2002 Earth Retaining Structures
  • Colour: Natural concrete grey — weathers to a consistent, earthy tone

Which Strength Grade Do You Need?

40MPa — Standard Residential

Suitable for walls under 1.0m in stable, well-drained ground. Appropriate for sandy loam soils, sandstone-based sites (Sydney's North Shore and Eastern Suburbs, Perth's coastal strip), and low-load garden walls where soil movement is minimal.

50MPa — Heavy Duty (Recommended for Most Australian Sites)

The correct specification for reactive clay soils, walls over 1.0m, driveway walls with vehicle surcharge, and any engineer-specified design. If you're building in Western Sydney's Wianamatta Shale clay, Melbourne's outer eastern or western suburbs, Brisbane's Oxley Clay corridor, or Adelaide's reactive soils — 50MPa is the right choice. When in doubt, specify 50MPa. The cost difference is small; the structural difference is significant.

Which Thickness — 80mm or 100mm?

The 80mm sleeper is the standard residential thickness, suitable for walls up to 1.2m in most conditions. The 100mm heavy duty sleeper is specified for walls over 1.2m, high surcharge loads, reactive clay sites, and any application where your engineer requires additional bending resistance. For the Arizona finish specifically, the 100mm thickness also adds visual depth to the block-face profile — worth considering for feature walls where aesthetics matter as much as performance.

Where the Arizona Block-Face Works Best

  • Traditional, heritage, and federation-style homes where rendered or brick finishes dominate
  • Rural, acreage, and lifestyle properties where a natural stone aesthetic suits the landscape
  • Large garden terracing and tiered retaining walls where visual scale matters
  • Boundary walls and street-facing retaining walls where kerb appeal is a priority
  • Pairing with natural stone capping, brick paving, and rendered masonry
  • Commercial landscaping and council projects requiring a premium finish

Pairing with the Right Steel Post

The Arizona sleeper is only as good as the post system behind it. Post selection depends on your wall height, soil type, and any surcharge loading above the wall.

Drainage — Non-Negotiable Behind Every Wall

Hydrostatic pressure from water build-up behind a retaining wall is the leading cause of wall failure in Australia — more common than wrong post sizing or poor construction. Every concrete sleeper retaining wall, regardless of height or finish, requires a complete drainage system: ag pipe at the base, drainage gravel behind the sleepers, geotextile filter fabric to prevent soil migration, and weep holes through the lowest course. Our Drainage Kit includes everything you need in one order.

Council Approval — Know Before You Build

In most Australian states, retaining walls over 600mm–1.0m require a building permit or development approval, and walls over 1.0m near boundaries or structures require a structural engineer's certification. Requirements vary by state and council. See our Retaining Wall Regulations — State-by-State Guide before commencing work.
