After 50 years of building retaining walls across Australia, I've seen what happens when post tops are left exposed. Water sits in the open cavity of a 100UC H-beam post, accelerates corrosion from the inside out, and within a few seasons you've got a structurally compromised post that looks fine from the outside. A $7 post cap prevents a $300+ post replacement. It's the cheapest insurance on any retaining wall job.
Our galvanised steel H post caps are precision-formed to fit snugly over the top of 100UC H-beam posts, the standard middle post used in concrete sleeper retaining wall systems across Australia. They seal the post cavity against water ingress, debris accumulation, and pest entry, while giving the finished wall a clean, professional appearance at the top course.

A 100UC H-beam post is a hollow section. The top of the post, once cut to height on site, is an open cavity exposed directly to the elements. In Australian conditions, particularly in coastal zones, high-rainfall areas, and reactive clay sites where ground movement is common, water pooling inside the post cavity causes:
Fitting a post cap at installation takes 10 seconds. Replacing a corroded post mid-wall takes a full day and a crane truck.

H post caps are designed for tool-free installation. Once your posts are cut to final height and the top course of concrete sleepers is in place, simply press the cap firmly over the post top. The friction fit holds the cap securely under normal conditions. In high-wind or coastal exposure sites, a small bead of construction adhesive around the inside rim of the cap before fitting will lock it permanently in place.
Install caps as the last step, after all sleepers are placed, drainage is complete, and backfill is finished. Caps fitted before backfill are frequently knocked off during compaction.
Post caps are the finishing detail on a complete galvanised steel post system. You'll also need:
Yes. Every exposed post top should be capped. Even posts that are partially buried still have an exposed top above the final sleeper course, that cavity is open to the weather and should be sealed. There is no scenario where leaving a post top open is the better option.
The friction fit is secure under normal residential conditions. For walls in exposed coastal or high-wind locations, apply a small bead of construction adhesive inside the cap rim before pressing onto the post. This creates a permanent bond that will outlast the wall itself.
Yes. Galvanised steel can be painted with a direct-to-metal (DTM) primer followed by an exterior enamel or epoxy topcoat. Lightly abrade the galvanised surface with 120-grit sandpaper before priming to improve adhesion. Charcoal and monument tones are popular choices to complement dark sleeper finishes.
No, this cap is sized for 100UC H-beam posts only. The 150UC section is significantly larger. Contact our team for 150-series post cap availability.
One cap per post. Count your middle posts (H-beam 100UC) and order that quantity. End posts and corner posts use different cap profiles, see the compatibility table above.
H post caps are lightweight and ship Australia-wide via standard freight. Order with your posts, sleepers, and drainage components for a single combined delivery.
