Classic Concrete Sleepers 200mm x 75mm

Classic Concrete Sleepers are a practical, strong, and low-maintenance retaining wall option for residential landscaping, garden walls, boundary retaining walls, raised garden beds, and general outdoor construction. Manufactured in a standard 200mm x 75mm profile, this classic range gives you the choice of smooth, timber-look, and sandstone block finishes to suit both modern and traditional Australian landscapes.

Each sleeper is made from high-strength reinforced concrete and is rated at 40+ MPa, with 2 reo bars for added strength and durability. Compared with timber sleepers, concrete sleepers provide longer lasting performance in ground-contact applications because they will not rot, warp, split, splinter, or attract termites.

Available Sizes and Weights

Classic Concrete Sleepers are available in three common lengths. The measurements below are based on post centres, not the exact physical sleeper length. Weights are indicative only and may vary slightly depending on finish and manufacturing tolerance.

Sleeper Length Approximate Weight Typical Use
1600mm 57kg Shorter wall bays, tighter access areas, steps, corners, and projects where closer post spacing is preferred.
2000mm 72kg General retaining wall projects, garden walls, boundary walls, and standard residential landscaping.
2400mm 83kg Longer straight wall runs where wider post centres are suitable and site access allows easier handling.

Available Finishes

The Classic Range includes a selection of smooth, timber-look, and sandstone block finishes. This allows the retaining wall to be matched to the surrounding home, fencing, paving, garden style, and landscape design.

  • Plain Grey Smooth: A clean, simple concrete finish suited to modern gardens, neutral landscapes, and projects where a plain retaining wall face is preferred.
  • Smooth Storm Grey: A darker smooth finish that works well with charcoal fencing, modern homes, concrete paving, and contemporary outdoor spaces.
  • Timberlook Plain: A timber-style face with a lighter natural tone, ideal for gardens where the look of timber is preferred without the maintenance of real timber sleepers.
  • Timberlook Storm Grey: A darker timber-grain finish suited to modern landscaping, native gardens, and boundary retaining walls where a stronger feature finish is desired.
  • Sandstone Block Paperbark: A warm sandstone-style block finish suited to traditional homes, coastal gardens, acreage properties, and softer landscape palettes.
  • Sandstone Block Storm Grey: A darker stone block-style finish that provides texture and depth for contemporary retaining walls and feature garden walls.

Technical Overview

The 200mm x 75mm sleeper profile is a widely used size for concrete sleeper retaining walls. The 200mm height allows walls to be built in clean horizontal courses, while the 75mm thickness provides a practical balance between strength, weight, and ease of handling during installation.

Because each sleeper course is 200mm high, wall heights can be planned in simple increments. For example, a 400mm wall will generally use two courses, a 600mm wall will generally use three courses, a 1.0m wall will generally use five courses, and a 1.2m wall will generally use six courses. Final wall design should always allow for footing depth, post size, soil type, surcharge loads, drainage, and local engineering requirements.

The reinforced concrete construction provides greater long-term stability than timber in ground-contact environments. Concrete does not provide a food source for termites, does not decay from moisture exposure, and does not twist or split as it ages. This makes Classic Concrete Sleepers a strong choice for permanent retaining wall projects where long service life and low maintenance are important.

Why Choose Classic Concrete Sleepers?

  • Multiple finish options: Choose from smooth, timber-look, and sandstone block styles to suit the design of the project.
  • 40+ MPa concrete: High-strength concrete provides reliable performance for retaining wall construction.
  • 2 reo bar reinforcement: Internal reinforcement helps improve strength and durability across the sleeper span.
  • Low maintenance: No staining, oiling, painting, or regular timber treatment is required.
  • Termite resistant: Concrete is not affected by termites, borers, or other insects.
  • Weather resistant: Suitable for exposed outdoor conditions, including rain, heat, soil moisture, and changing ground conditions.
  • Fire resistant: Concrete provides better fire resistance than timber sleepers in exposed landscape applications.
  • Will not rot or warp: Unlike timber, concrete will not rot from ground contact, warp out of shape, split, or splinter over time.

Design Applications

  • Residential retaining walls
  • Garden retaining walls
  • Raised garden beds
  • Boundary and fence-line retaining walls
  • Driveway and front yard retaining walls
  • Terraced landscaping
  • Feature walls with smooth, timber-look, or sandstone block finishes
  • Projects where a durable alternative to timber sleepers is preferred

Choosing the Right Finish

For a clean and simple look, choose a smooth finish such as Plain Grey Smooth or Smooth Storm Grey. These finishes suit contemporary homes, rendered exteriors, concrete paving, and minimalist gardens.

For a warmer landscape appearance, choose a timber-look finish. Timberlook Plain and Timberlook Storm Grey provide the visual texture of timber while maintaining the durability and termite resistance of concrete.

For a more traditional or textured wall, choose a sandstone block finish. Sandstone Block Paperbark gives a warmer natural look, while Sandstone Block Storm Grey provides a darker, more modern stone-style finish.

Installation Considerations

Classic Concrete Sleepers should be installed with compatible galvanised steel retaining wall posts. The correct post type, post length, footing size, and sleeper length depend on wall height, soil type, drainage, surcharge loads, site access, and engineering requirements.

For low walls in stable ground, C-channel posts are commonly used. For taller walls, clay soils, corners, surcharge loads, or engineer-specified projects, H-beam posts are generally preferred for additional strength and lateral resistance.

Drainage is essential for retaining wall performance. A suitable drainage system usually includes free-draining aggregate behind the wall, geotextile fabric to separate soil from the drainage zone, and slotted agricultural pipe at the base of the wall discharging to a legal outlet. Poor drainage can increase water pressure behind the wall and may lead to movement or wall failure.
