Sydney's geology — Hawkesbury sandstone ridges and shale-derived clay valleys — creates dramatically different post sizing requirements within just a few kilometres. Getting the post series right for your specific suburb and soil type is critical to long-term wall performance.
Selecting the correct H-beam post series for your Sydney site depends on wall height, soil type, and surcharge load. Sydney's shale clay soils — which underlie the Inner West, Western Sydney, and large parts of the Hills District — generate significantly higher lateral pressure than sandstone sites, requiring heavier post sections and deeper footings.
100 Series posts are suitable for walls up to 600mm on well-drained sandstone sites with no clay subsoil and no surcharge load. In Sydney, this applies to a limited number of Eastern Suburbs and Northern Beaches sites on pure Hawkesbury sandstone. If your suburb sits on or near a shale-sandstone transition zone, default to 150 Series — the transition boundary is not always visible at the surface.
150 Series posts are the correct specification for walls 600mm–1.0m on inner Sydney and moderate shale clay sites. Suitable for Inner West, lower North Shore, and Sutherland Shire sites where clay is present but terrain is relatively flat. Not suitable for steep Western Sydney clay sites or walls with driveway or pool surcharge.
200 Series posts are the correct specification for all Western Sydney shale clay sites, all walls over 1.0m, and any wall with surcharge loading. Western Sydney's deep shale clay plains — Liverpool, Campbelltown, Fairfield, Blacktown, Penrith — generate lateral pressure that 150 Series posts cannot resist over the long term. The 2021–2022 La Niña event caused widespread retaining wall post failures across Western Sydney where undersized posts were used on reactive clay sites.
On Sydney's shale clay soils, posts must penetrate through the reactive clay layer and into stable subsoil or weathered shale. Shallow footings on reactive clay will move seasonally as the soil shrinks and swells:
All footing holes must be filled with concrete (minimum N20 mix) and cured for at least 48 hours before sleepers are installed. On Western Sydney clay sites, footing holes may encounter groundwater — pour concrete immediately.
All our H-beam posts are hot-dip galvanised to Australian standards. Sydney's shale clay soils are moderately corrosive to steel — particularly in Western Sydney where the clay maintains high moisture year-round. Hot-dip galvanising provides a zinc coating that sacrificially protects the steel from corrosion, significantly extending post service life compared to paint-only or cold-galvanised finishes. Within 2km of Sydney's coastline, salt air accelerates corrosion — hot-dip galvanising is the minimum standard for all coastal Sydney retaining wall posts.
H-beam posts must be paired with 50MPa concrete sleepers for all Sydney retaining wall projects. Sydney's shale clay soils are Class H1 to H2 reactive — 40MPa sleepers do not provide adequate long-term performance on these sites. Western Sydney's shale clay plains — Liverpool, Campbelltown, Fairfield, Blacktown, Penrith — are Class H1 to H2 reactive and generate significant lateral pressure on retaining wall posts. 200 Series H-beam posts are the correct specification for all Western Sydney clay sites for walls over 600mm. 150 Series posts are undersized for these soil conditions and have a documented failure history on Western Sydney clay sites during high rainfall events.
On Sydney's shale clay soils, posts must be set a minimum of 800mm deep for walls up to 1.0m, and 1.0m–1.2m for taller walls. Posts must penetrate through the reactive clay layer and into stable subsoil or weathered shale. The reactive clay layer in Western Sydney can extend to 600–800mm depth — footings that terminate within the clay layer will move seasonally.
100 Series posts are suitable for walls up to 600mm on pure Hawkesbury sandstone sites with no clay subsoil and no surcharge load. Eastern Suburbs sites on sandstone headlands — Bondi, Coogee, Bronte — may qualify. However, many Eastern Suburbs sites have sandy loam topsoil over clay subsoil at 300–500mm depth. Always confirm subsoil conditions before specifying 100 Series posts. If clay is present at any depth within the footing zone, use 150 Series minimum.
