With over 50 years of hands-on retaining wall construction experience across Australia, we understand Mackay's distinct retaining wall environment. Mackay sits at the heart of the Whitsunday Coast — a tropical city with over 1,600mm of annual rainfall concentrated in a November–April wet season, high humidity year-round, salt air within 5km of the coast, and cyclone wind loading (Wind Region C). The Pioneer River valley's alluvial clay soils and the coastal plain's reactive clay create demanding conditions for retaining wall posts that require careful specification.
100 Series posts are suitable for walls up to 600mm on well-drained sandy or gravelly sites with no clay subsoil and no surcharge load. In Mackay, this applies to a very small number of sites on elevated terrain with non-reactive subsoil. Always confirm subsoil conditions before specifying 100 Series — clay is present at depth across most of the Mackay coastal plain.
150 Series posts are the correct specification for walls 600mm–1.0m on moderate clay sites on relatively flat terrain with no surcharge load. Suitable for Andergrove, Beaconsfield, and North Mackay sites where clay is present but the wet-dry cycle is less extreme than the Pioneer River floodplain.
200 Series posts are the correct specification for all Pioneer River valley sites, all coastal plain sites, all walls over 1.0m, and any wall with surcharge loading. The Pioneer River valley's deep alluvial clay soils are Class H1 to H2 reactive under AS 2870-2011. Mackay's wet season delivers intense rainfall events on already-saturated clay soils, generating lateral forces that 150 Series posts cannot resist over the long term. 200 Series posts are mandatory for all Sarina and Pioneer Valley sites.
On Pioneer River valley sites, footing holes may fill with water during the wet season — pour concrete immediately. Posts must penetrate through the reactive clay layer into stable subsoil.
All our H-beam posts are hot-dip galvanised to Australian standards. Mackay's combination of tropical humidity, salt air within 5km of the coast, and cyclone wind loading (Wind Region C) creates one of Australia's most aggressive corrosion environments for steel. Hot-dip galvanising is the minimum standard for all Mackay retaining wall posts. Within 500m of the ocean or tidal waterways, inspect galvanising annually.
In Queensland, retaining wall approvals are governed by the Building Act 1975 (QLD):
Mackay falls under Mackay Regional Council. Proserpine and the Whitsundays fall under Whitsunday Regional Council. Bowen also falls under Whitsunday Regional Council. Always confirm cyclone wind region requirements before commencing work.
The Pioneer River valley's deep alluvial clay soils are Class H1 to H2 reactive — among the most reactive in Central Queensland. Mackay's wet season delivers intense rainfall events on already-saturated clay, generating lateral forces on retaining wall posts that 150 Series posts cannot resist over the long term. The combination of reactive clay, high rainfall, and cyclone wind loading makes 200 Series posts the only correct specification for Pioneer Valley sites for walls over 600mm.
Yes — Mackay is in Wind Region C under AS 4055, requiring structures to be designed for cyclonic wind loads. For walls over 1.0m, engage a structural engineer to confirm post sizing and footing depth for cyclone wind region requirements. 200 Series posts with deep concrete footings are the correct specification for all cyclone-affected Mackay sites.
Moranbah and the Bowen Basin sit on deep black cracking clay (Vertosol) soils — Class H2 reactive under AS 2870. These soils crack to 500mm depth during the dry season and expand explosively when rain arrives. 200 Series H-beam posts are mandatory for all Moranbah and Bowen Basin retaining wall projects for walls over 600mm, without exception.
Yes — we deliver to Proserpine, Bowen, Moranbah, and surrounding Central Queensland areas. Freight is calculated at checkout to your postcode. For remote Bowen Basin deliveries, contact our team to confirm crane access and lead times before ordering.
