Cairns is Australia's wettest major city — receiving over 2,000mm of annual rainfall concentrated in a November–April wet season, with individual events regularly exceeding 200mm in 24 hours. The Atherton Tablelands above Cairns receive over 3,000mm annually. Cairns sits in Wind Region C for cyclone loading, and the city's geology spans coastal sandy soils, alluvial clay flats, and the steep basalt-derived clay soils of the Tablelands — each requiring different post specifications.
100 Series posts are not recommended for Cairns retaining wall projects. Cairns' combination of Wind Region C cyclone loading and high annual rainfall on clay soils means 100 Series posts do not provide adequate long-term structural performance. Even on Cairns' coastal sandy soils, the wet season rainfall intensity and cyclone loading require a minimum of 150 Series.
150 Series posts are the minimum specification for walls 600mm–1.0m on Cairns' coastal sandy sites — northern beaches suburbs (Trinity Beach, Clifton Beach, Palm Cove) where the soil profile is sandy with no reactive clay subsoil. Not suitable for Gordonvale, Innisfail, or any Atherton Tablelands site.
200 Series posts are the correct specification for all Cairns clay sites, all Atherton Tablelands sites, all walls over 1.0m, and all cyclone-exposed sites. The Atherton Tablelands — Atherton, Mareeba, Kuranda, Yungaburra — sit on deep basalt-derived clay soils that are Class H1 to H2 reactive under AS 2870-2011. The Tablelands' extreme rainfall — over 3,000mm annually at Atherton — saturates these clay soils continuously during the wet season, generating sustained lateral forces that 150 Series posts cannot resist over the long term.
On Innisfail and Atherton Tablelands sites, footing holes may fill with water during the wet season — pour concrete immediately.
All our H-beam posts are hot-dip galvanised to Australian standards. Cairns' combination of tropical humidity, salt air along the entire coastal strip, and cyclone wind loading creates one of Australia's most aggressive corrosion environments for steel. Hot-dip galvanising is the minimum standard for all Cairns retaining wall posts. Within 500m of the Coral Sea coastline, inspect galvanising annually.

The basalt-derived clay soils on the Tablelands are Class H1 to H2 reactive and remain saturated for extended periods during the wet season. This sustained saturation generates continuous lateral pressure on retaining wall posts that 150 Series posts cannot resist over the long term. Combined with steep terrain that adds slope surcharge, 200 Series posts are the only correct specification for all Tablelands retaining wall projects over 600mm.
Yes — Cairns is in Wind Region C under AS 4055, requiring structures to be designed for cyclonic wind loads. Cairns has one of the highest historical cyclone frequencies of any Australian city. For walls over 1.0m, engage a structural engineer to confirm post sizing and footing depth for cyclone wind region requirements. 200 Series posts with deep concrete footings are the correct specification for all cyclone-affected Cairns sites.
Innisfail sits in the Johnstone River valley — one of the wettest locations in Australia, receiving over 3,500mm of annual rainfall on deep alluvial clay soils. 200 Series H-beam posts are mandatory for all Innisfail retaining wall projects for walls over 600mm. The combination of deep alluvial clay, extreme rainfall, and Wind Region C cyclone loading makes Innisfail one of the most demanding retaining wall environments in Queensland.
