H-Beam Steel Post for Concrete Sleeper Retaining Walls | Retaining Walls Direct

H-Beam (UC) Steel Post for Concrete Sleeper Retaining Walls

The H-Beam Universal Column (UC) steel post is the structural specification for concrete sleeper retaining walls over 1.0m, reactive clay sites, and all engineer-specified designs across Australia. Where C-Channel posts reach their structural limit, H-Beam steps in — delivering the superior section modulus needed to resist the higher lateral earth pressures that taller walls, reactive soils, and surcharge loads impose.

With 40+ years of hands-on retaining wall experience across Australia, we specify H-Beam for the majority of retaining wall projects on reactive clay soils — Western Sydney's Wianamatta Shale, Melbourne's Silurian Clay, Brisbane's Oxley Clay, Adelaide's Keswick Clay, Perth's Guildford Clay, and Canberra's reactive clay all demand it. Get the post specification right and your wall will perform structurally for decades. Get it wrong and you'll be rebuilding.

All H-Beam posts are hot-dip galvanised to AS/NZS 4680 for maximum corrosion resistance in Australian soil conditions, and manufactured to AS 4678-2002 Earth Retaining Structures. Delivered direct to your site, Australia-wide.

When to Specify H-Beam

  • Any wall over 1.0m in height
  • Any wall on reactive clay soils — regardless of height
  • Driveway retaining walls with vehicle surcharge load
  • All engineer-specified and DA/CDC-approved designs
  • Walls with 100mm heavy duty sleepers
  • Tiered retaining wall systems
  • Any wall where long-term structural performance is non-negotiable

H-Beam vs C-Channel — Which Do You Need?

C-Channel is appropriate for walls under 1.0m in stable, well-drained sandy soils with no surcharge load. For the majority of Australian retaining wall projects — particularly on reactive clay soils — H-Beam is the correct specification. Post Sizing

H-Beam posts are available in multiple sizes to suit different wall heights and soil conditions. Our team will specify the correct UC section for your wall based on height, soil type, and surcharge load. Contact us for a free specification.

Council Approval & Compliance

Walls over 1.0m require approval in most Australian states. All walls must comply with AS 4678-2002. See our Retaining Wall Regulations — State-by-State Guide.
