Timber Grain Concrete Sleeper

Colour: Charcoal
Size: 900mm

Timber Grain Concrete Sleepers

Timber Grain concrete sleepers are designed for retaining walls where the warm, rustic appearance of timber is preferred, but the long-term strength and durability of reinforced concrete are required. The timber-look face provides a natural grain-style finish with a traditional outdoor character, making it well suited to residential gardens, rural properties, acreage landscaping, boundary walls, raised garden beds, and retaining walls that need to blend with timber fencing, decking, gravel paths, and native planting.

Unlike treated pine or hardwood sleepers, Timber Grain concrete sleepers will not rot, warp, split, splinter, or attract termites. Each sleeper is manufactured from sealed, N12 steel reinforced concrete and is 250mm extra high, giving the wall a larger visual face per course compared with standard 200mm high sleepers. This can reduce the number of horizontal courses required and create a stronger, more substantial wall appearance.

Available Lengths and Wall Height Suitability

Timber Grain concrete sleepers are available in shorter structural lengths than many standard sleeper profiles. This gives installers more flexibility when designing retaining walls for higher loads, clay soils, tight access, and shorter post spacing. In general, shorter sleeper spans can provide stronger retaining wall capacity because the sleeper is supported at closer centres between steel posts.

Sleeper Length Colour Typical Use Wall Height Suitability in Clay Soils Price
900mm Charcoal Higher retaining wall applications where closer post spacing is required for added structural support. Suitable for retaining walls up to 3.0m high in clay soils, subject to engineering, post selection, footing design, drainage, and site conditions. $29.90 inc. GST
1500mm Charcoal Medium to high retaining walls where structural capacity and manageable installation weight are both important. Suitable for retaining walls up to 2.0m high in clay soils, subject to engineering, post selection, footing design, drainage, and site conditions. $42.55 inc. GST
2130mm Charcoal Lower retaining walls, garden terraces, and longer runs where wider sleeper spacing helps speed up installation. Suitable for retaining walls up to 1.4m high in clay soils, subject to engineering, post selection, footing design, drainage, and site conditions. $63.25 inc. GST
Custom Custom colour Projects requiring a specific colour finish, double-sided face pattern, or stronger N16 reinforcement. Subject to engineering, selected length, reinforcement, and site conditions. From $52.90 inc. GST

Technical Overview

The 250mm extra high profile is one of the key technical differences of the Timber Grain concrete sleeper. Because each sleeper course is 250mm high, fewer courses may be needed to reach the same finished wall height compared with 200mm high sleepers. For example, a 1.0m wall generally requires four 250mm courses, while a 1.5m wall generally requires six 250mm courses. Final wall design should always allow for embedment, drainage, finished ground levels, post size, soil type, surcharge loads, and engineering requirements.

N12 steel reinforcement provides internal tensile strength that helps the sleeper resist bending from retained soil pressure. Concrete performs well in compression, while steel reinforcement assists with tensile forces across the sleeper span. This makes reinforced concrete a more dimensionally stable and long-life retaining wall material than timber, especially in wet soil, clay, coastal areas, and exposed landscape applications.

Why Choose Timber Grain Concrete Sleepers?

  • Natural timber look: The timber grain face gives the wall a traditional rustic appearance without the maintenance burden of real timber.
  • 250mm extra high profile: Larger sleeper height creates a stronger visual face and may reduce the number of sleeper courses needed.
  • N12 steel reinforced: Reinforcement improves bending resistance and structural performance when installed with the correct steel post system.
  • Sealed finish: The sealed surface helps improve appearance and makes the sleeper easier to clean in exposed outdoor areas.
  • Termite resistant: Concrete is impervious to termites and other insects, making it a safer long-term alternative to timber sleepers.
  • Will not rot or warp: Unlike timber, concrete will not rot from ground contact, twist out of shape, split, splinter, or break down over time.
  • Weather resistant: Built for long-term exposure to rain, sun, soil moisture, heat, and changing ground conditions.
  • Low maintenance: No staining, oiling, painting, or regular timber treatment is required.
  • Fire resistant: Concrete provides better fire resistance than timber in exposed landscape and boundary wall applications.

Design Applications

  • Residential retaining walls
  • Rustic garden retaining walls
  • Boundary and fence-line retaining walls
  • Raised garden beds and terraced landscapes
  • Acreage, rural, and lifestyle property landscaping
  • Driveway and front yard retaining walls
  • Projects where a timber-look finish is preferred but real timber maintenance is not
  • Double-sided fence and boundary applications by custom request

Timber Grain vs Real Timber Sleepers

Timber sleepers are often chosen for their familiar appearance and lower upfront cost, but they are more vulnerable to ground moisture, termites, fungal decay, splitting, and long-term movement. Timber Grain concrete sleepers provide the appearance of timber with the structural advantages of reinforced concrete. They are better suited to permanent retaining wall projects where long service life, low maintenance, and reduced replacement risk are priorities.

Timber Grain vs Smooth Concrete Sleepers

Smooth concrete sleepers suit clean, modern, minimalist retaining wall designs. Timber Grain sleepers suit warmer, more natural landscapes where the wall needs to visually connect with timber fencing, decking, garden edging, native plants, and rural-style outdoor areas. Both profiles can provide strong retaining wall performance, but the Timber Grain finish is better where texture and natural character are important parts of the design.

Installation Considerations

Timber Grain concrete sleepers should be installed with compatible galvanised steel retaining wall posts. The correct post type and size depend on wall height, soil type, surcharge loads, footing depth, drainage, and whether the wall is supporting a fence, driveway, structure, or sloping ground above.

For low walls in stable, well-drained ground, C-Channel posts may be suitable. For taller walls, reactive clay sites, corners, surcharge loads, or engineer-specified designs, H-Beam posts are generally preferred because they provide higher bending strength and stiffness against lateral earth pressure.

Drainage should be treated as a structural requirement. A correct retaining wall drainage system normally includes free-draining gravel behind the wall, geotextile fabric to separate soil from the drainage zone, and slotted agricultural pipe at the base of the wall discharging to a legal outlet. Poor drainage can increase hydrostatic pressure behind the sleepers and may lead to wall movement, leaning, cracking, or structural failure.

Custom Options

Custom colours, double-sided timber grain patterns, and stronger N16 steel reinforcement are available by request. A double-sided pattern may be suitable for fence-style applications or exposed walls where both sides of the sleeper will be visible. Stronger N16 reinforcement may be considered for engineer-specified projects, higher load conditions, or custom retaining wall requirements.

Please note that custom orders are subject to a minimum order quantity of 24 sleepers and an estimated 4 week production timeframe.

Pairing with the Right Steel Post

Steel post option: For low retaining walls in stable ground, pair Timber Grain concrete sleepers with C-Channel PFC Steel Posts for Concrete Sleepers.

Heavy-duty post option: For walls over 1.0m, reactive clay sites, surcharge loads, corners, or engineer-specified designs, use H-Beam Steel Posts for Concrete Sleepers.

Corner and end post option: For walls that change direction, terminate at an exposed end, or require joins between runs, use Corner, L-Post, Joiner and End Posts for Retaining Walls.

Drainage and Wall Protection

Drainage kit: Protect the wall from water pressure with a complete Drainage Kit for Retaining Walls.

Fabric layer: Separate soil from the drainage zone using Geotextile Fabric and Wall Liner for Retaining Walls.
