Retaining Walls Direct delivers concrete sleepers, galvanised steel H-beam and C-channel posts, drainage kits and retaining wall accessories to Yeppoon, Emu Park, Barlows Hill, Cooee Bay, Zilzie and surrounding areas on the Capricorn Coast. We supply residential homeowners, landscapers, builders and civil contractors across the Livingstone Shire.
Yeppoon and the Capricorn Coast sit just north of the Tropic of Capricorn. The region is exposed to tropical cyclones — Cyclone Marcia (2015) caused significant property damage across Yeppoon. Salt-laden coastal air is also a major factor — all steel components must be hot-dip galvanised to AS 4680 for adequate corrosion protection. Sandy coastal soils combined with cyclonic rainfall events create specific challenges for retaining wall design.
Important: Council approval and engineering requirements vary by wall height, site conditions and proximity to coastal hazard zones. Always check with Livingstone Shire Council or engage a licensed engineer before starting. Retaining Walls Direct is a materials supplier only.

Coastal Yeppoon features sandy soils with good free drainage but low structural bearing capacity. Slightly inland areas carry heavier clay-based soils. The entire region is affected by salt-laden sea breezes that can corrode inadequately protected steel. Hot-dip galvanised posts and stainless or galvanised fixings are essential. Post spacing should be conservative (1.5m maximum) on sandy coastal soils where lateral support is reduced.
Under Queensland's Building Act 1975, retaining walls over 1.0m require a building permit and a QBCC-licensed contractor. Properties in coastal hazard zones may have additional requirements. Contact Livingstone Shire Council for your specific requirements. QBCC: qbcc.qld.gov.au
Sandy coastal soils drain freely but cyclonic rainfall events can overwhelm any drainage system. Every retaining wall must include: 20mm drainage aggregate for the full retained height; slotted ag-drain pipe at the base directed to a legal outlet; geotextile fabric (min 140gsm) between backfill and drainage aggregate; and weep holes at 1.8m centres. Ensure drainage outlets cannot be blocked by sand migration or storm debris. Browse drainage products →
Walls over 1.0m require a building permit from Livingstone Shire Council. Properties in coastal hazard zones may have additional requirements. Always confirm with council before starting.
Hot-dip galvanised posts to AS 4680 are mandatory — no exceptions in a coastal salt-air environment. Paint or powder coat alone is insufficient. Browse galvanised steel posts →
Concrete sleepers themselves are highly durable. The key is proper engineering — correct post sizing, embedment depth, post spacing and drainage for the rated wind and water loads in your area. Engage a QBCC-licensed contractor for walls over 1.0m in cyclone-affected areas.
