Retaining Walls Direct delivers concrete sleepers, galvanised steel H-beam and C-channel posts, drainage products and retaining wall accessories to Dubbo, Narromine, Wellington, Gilgandra and across the Central West of New South Wales. We supply residential homeowners, landscapers, builders and civil contractors throughout the region.
Dubbo sits on the Macquarie River floodplain in Central West NSW. Soils in this region are predominantly heavy black cracking clay (Vertosols) — highly reactive soils that expand significantly when wet and contract and crack when dry. This soil type is among the most demanding for retaining wall design. Under-designed walls on reactive clay in Dubbo have a high failure rate. Post spacing and drainage are critical to long-term performance.
Important: Retaining wall approval requirements in Dubbo vary by wall height, location and soil conditions. Always consult Dubbo Regional Council or engage a licensed engineer before starting any wall. Retaining Walls Direct is a materials supplier only.

Concrete sleepers and steel posts are heavy and require specialist freight. We dispatch via crane truck (Hiab) or flatbed. Delivery cost depends on order size, suburb and site access. Contact us for a freight quote →
Dubbo's dominant soil type is heavy black cracking clay (Vertosol). These soils have extreme shrink-swell behaviour — they expand when wet (pushing against wall faces and posts) and contract sharply when dry (pulling away from structures). Key design responses include: reduced post spacing (1.5m maximum), 50MPa sleepers, aggressive drainage to remove moisture quickly, and geotextile fabric to prevent fine clay particles from migrating into drainage aggregate.
In NSW, retaining walls over 1.0m or within 1.0m of a boundary generally require development consent under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 and applicable SEPP. Dubbo Regional Council may have local provisions. Always confirm requirements with Dubbo Regional Council before commencing your project.
Drainage is the single most important design element for retaining walls on Dubbo's black clay soils. Every wall must include: 20mm drainage aggregate for the full retained height; slotted ag-drain pipe at the base directed to a legal outlet; heavy-duty geotextile fabric (min 140gsm) between backfill and drainage aggregate to prevent clay migration; and weep holes at 1.8m centres. The drainage aggregate must remain free of fine clay — use geotextile fabric correctly. Browse drainage products →
Walls over 1.0m or within 1.0m of a boundary generally require development consent from Dubbo Regional Council under NSW planning law. Always confirm your specific property's requirements before starting.
Dubbo's black cracking clay (Vertosol) is one of the most reactive soil types in Australia. It expands when wet and contracts when dry, creating pressure cycles that can crack or displace poorly designed walls. Post spacing, sleeper strength and drainage all need to account for this behaviour.
50MPa sleepers are recommended for Dubbo's reactive clay conditions. The additional density and strength provide better resistance to the lateral pressure created by expanding clay soils. Browse 50MPa sleepers →
