Concrete sleepers are 200 × 75mm steel-reinforced (40+ MPa) retaining-wall sleepers that stack horizontally between galvanised steel posts. Our Classic range comes in plain grey, sandstone-block, timber-look and smooth storm grey, for homeowners, landscapers and trade building garden, boundary and terraced walls. Australian-made, low-maintenance and termite-proof, sold and delivered Australia-wide by Retaining Walls Direct.
Written and product-checked by the Retaining Walls Direct team, supplying concrete sleeper retaining walls across Australia. Last updated: June 2026.
Our Classic range of concrete sleepers combines the strength and low maintenance of steel-reinforced concrete with a finish for any project: plain grey, sandstone-block, timber-look or smooth storm grey. Every sleeper is Australian-made, rated 40+ MPa and reinforced with 2 steel Reo bars, engineer-certified and built for Australian conditions.
1. Pick your finish. Plain Grey Smooth is the budget classic; Sandstone Block (Storm Grey or Paperbark) gives a natural-stone look; Timber Look (Storm Grey or Plain) mimics timber without the upkeep; Smooth Storm Grey is a clean modern charcoal.
2. Match the length to your posts. Lengths (1600 / 2000 / 2400mm) are the distance between post centres (post spacing); the actual sleeper length is approximately 10–15mm less, so it seats correctly into the galvanised H posts at each end. Wider spacing means fewer posts but a higher load per post, so taller walls use shorter spans.
3. Work out how many you need. Each sleeper is 200mm high, so a wall needs 5 sleepers per metre of height, per bay (e.g. a 1.0m wall across a 2.4m bay = 5 × 2400mm sleepers). Use the WallWise Pro calculator for an exact take-off.
Concrete sleepers won't rot, warp, split or attract termites the way timber does, need no oiling or painting, and typically outlast timber several times over, so although the upfront price is higher, the cost over the life of the wall is usually lower. Timber can be cheaper to buy and lighter to handle. For a permanent wall in Australian conditions, concrete is the long-term value choice.

A finished wall needs galvanised H, C and corner posts, caps, fence brackets & hardware, and proper drainage: ag pipe, geo matting and free-draining gravel. New to the system? Read How to build a concrete sleeper retaining wall, or order a complete retaining wall kit.
Water behind a wall is the number-one cause of failure, always plan drainage. See our drainage guide and backfill guide. Built to the principles of AS 4678 Earth-retaining structures. Council approval and engineering depend on wall height, soil, drainage, boundary position and surcharge loads, always check with your local council or a qualified engineer before starting.
Sleepers are heavy and palletised. Send your postcode and quantities for a freight quote, or contact the team before you order.
200mm high × 75mm thick, available in 1600, 2000 and 2400mm (post-centre spacing). Actual sleeper length is approximately 10–15mm less than the stated size.
Approximately 57kg (1600mm), 72kg (2000mm) and 83kg (2400mm), plan for a two-person or mechanical lift.
Galvanised steel H posts between sleepers, with C posts for ends and corner posts for returns. Post size and spacing depend on wall height, see our steel post range.
Five sleepers per metre of wall height, per bay. A 0.8m wall on 2.0m posts needs 4 × 2000mm sleepers per bay. The WallWise Pro calculator gives an exact figure.
It depends on wall height, location and your council, walls under 1m often don't need approval; taller, boundary or driveway walls usually do. Always confirm locally.
