Stone Face concrete sleepers are suited to retaining wall projects where both appearance and structural reliability matter. The 1800mm length gives the wall shorter spans between steel posts compared with longer 2000mm or 2400mm sleeper formats, which can be useful where site conditions require a more controlled post spacing. Shorter sleeper spans can also assist with handling, access, and installation on tight residential sites.
The 200mm sleeper height allows the wall to be built in clean horizontal courses. For example, a 600mm wall will typically use three sleeper courses, a 1.0m wall will typically use five courses, and a 1.8m wall will typically use nine courses. Final wall design should always allow for site conditions, retained soil load, drainage, footing depth, post type, wall surcharge, fences above the wall, and local engineering requirements.
Stone Face sleepers are best suited to projects where the retaining wall will remain visible and needs to create a stronger design impact. The textured face helps soften large wall areas and creates more visual depth than a plain concrete finish. Smooth sleepers are often preferred for minimalist architectural designs, rendered-style landscapes, or projects where the wall is intended to visually recede. For low walls in stable, well-drained ground, C-Channel posts may be suitable. For walls over 1.0m, reactive clay sites, corners, surcharge loads, or engineer-specified designs, H-Beam posts are generally preferred because they provide higher resistance to lateral earth pressure.
Drainage should be treated as a structural requirement, not an optional extra. A correct retaining wall drainage system normally includes free-draining aggregate behind the wall, geotextile fabric to separate soil from the drainage zone, and slotted agricultural pipe at the base of the wall discharging to a legal outlet. Poor drainage can increase hydrostatic pressure behind the wall and lead to movement, cracking, leaning, or wall failure.
