Geotextile Fabric / Wall Liner for Retaining Walls

Geotextile Fabric & Wall Liner for Retaining Walls

Geotextile fabric is the unsung hero of a well-built retaining wall. Installed between the native soil and the drainage aggregate behind the wall, it prevents fine soil particles from migrating into the drainage zone over time — keeping the drainage system clean and functional for the life of the wall.

Without geotextile fabric, even a well-designed drainage system will eventually silt up. Once the drainage zone is blocked, hydrostatic pressure builds behind the wall and failure follows. It's a small cost that protects a much larger investment.

How Geotextile Fabric Is Used in Retaining Walls

  • Drainage zone liner — laid against the native soil face before backfilling with drainage aggregate. Allows water to pass through freely while blocking soil particles from entering the gravel layer.
  • Ag pipe wrap — wrapped around the agricultural pipe at the base of the wall to prevent silt from entering and blocking the pipe over time.
  • Wall face liner — in some applications, used behind the sleeper face to prevent soil from pushing through gaps between sleepers, particularly on walls with coarser backfill.
