Geotextile Fabric / Wall Liner for Retaining Walls

Geotextile fabric is the unsung hero of retaining wall construction. Installed between the native soil and the coarse gravel drainage layer behind your wall, geotextile fabric prevents fine soil particles from migrating into the drainage layer over time — a process called fines migration that progressively blocks drainage, increases water pressure, and ultimately causes wall failure.

With 40+ years of hands-on retaining wall experience across Australia, we include geotextile fabric in every drainage specification we provide. It's a low-cost component that protects a significant investment. Don't build a retaining wall without it.

How Geotextile Fabric Works

Geotextile fabric acts as a filter between the native soil and the drainage gravel. It allows water to pass freely while blocking soil particles from entering the drainage layer. Without it, fine clay and silt particles gradually migrate into the gravel, reducing drainage capacity over time until the drainage system fails entirely — at which point water pressure builds behind the wall until it fails structurally.

Installation

Wrap the geotextile fabric around the coarse gravel drainage zone behind the wall, separating it from the native soil on all sides. Overlap joins by a minimum of 300mm. See our full installation guide: How to Install Drainage Behind a Retaining Wall.

Compliance

All retaining walls must comply with AS 4678-2002 Earth Retaining Structures. See our Retaining Wall Regulations — State-by-State Guide.
