Geo Matting

Variant: Geo Matting 50m x 1m | 120gsm | 1.2mm thick

Geo Matting

Geo Matting is a permeable geotextile fabric used in retaining wall, drainage, landscaping, and civil works applications. It is designed to help separate soil from drainage material while still allowing water to pass through, making it an important accessory for concrete sleeper retaining wall drainage systems.

When installed behind a retaining wall, geo matting helps keep soil and fine particles away from drainage gravel and ag pipe. This supports better long-term drainage performance, helps reduce erosion, and can assist in preventing drainage systems from becoming clogged with silt or soil movement.

Technical Overview

Geo matting is used as a separation and filtration layer. In a retaining wall drainage system, it is commonly placed between the retained soil and the drainage aggregate behind the wall. This helps stop fine soil particles from migrating into the gravel layer while still allowing water to move through the fabric and down toward the ag pipe.

This is important because drainage gravel and ag pipe need to remain open and free-draining. If soil washes into the drainage zone, the gravel can become contaminated and the ag pipe can become blocked. Over time, this may reduce drainage performance and increase water pressure behind the retaining wall.

Why Use Geo Matting Behind Retaining Walls?

  • Separates soil and gravel: Helps prevent soil from mixing into the drainage aggregate behind the wall.
  • Filters fine particles: Allows water through while helping hold back silt and granular soil.
  • Supports drainage performance: Helps keep ag pipe and drainage gravel working more effectively over time.
  • Reduces erosion: Helps control soil movement where ground has been disturbed during construction.
  • Protects the drainage zone: Helps reduce contamination of clean drainage aggregate.
  • Useful for landscaping: Suitable for retaining walls, garden beds, drainage trenches, and general ground separation work.

Common Applications

  • Concrete sleeper retaining wall drainage
  • Geotextile layer behind retaining walls
  • Drainage gravel separation
  • Ag pipe protection
  • Garden drainage systems
  • Landscape drainage trenches
  • Soil stabilisation and erosion control
  • Construction areas with disturbed ground
  • Raised garden beds and boundary drainage zones

Geo Matting and Ag Pipe

Geo matting works best as part of a complete retaining wall drainage system. A typical setup includes free-draining aggregate behind the wall, ag pipe at the base of the drainage zone, and geo matting placed between the soil and aggregate to reduce contamination from fine soil particles.

For clay-heavy sites, silty soils, or areas with poor drainage, geo matting becomes even more important because fine particles can migrate easily into the drainage zone. Using geo matting with clean drainage gravel and correctly installed ag pipe helps reduce the risk of blocked drainage and water pressure build-up behind the wall.

Installation Considerations

Install geo matting so it separates the retained soil from the drainage aggregate. The fabric should overlap at joins and be positioned to prevent soil from washing into the gravel layer. Avoid tearing the fabric during backfilling, and make sure the drainage gravel and ag pipe remain clean during installation.

Geo matting should not be treated as a replacement for proper drainage design. A retaining wall still needs suitable ag pipe, free-draining aggregate, legal water discharge, correct backfill, appropriate steel posts, and footings designed for the wall height and site conditions.
