Galvanised Steel H Posts 100mm 100UC – UC 14.8

The Galvanised Steel H Post 100mm 100UC – UC 14.8 is a strong, hot-dip galvanised retaining wall post designed for concrete sleeper retaining wall systems. Also known as a 100UC H-beam or Universal Column post, this steel section is commonly used for straight wall runs where concrete sleepers need to slot into both sides of the post.

The H-shaped profile provides greater lateral stiffness than a standard C-channel post, making it a practical choice for retaining walls where extra strength is required, including walls in reactive soil, walls with higher retained loads, stepped walls, and applications where an engineer has specified a UC post. The galvanised finish helps protect the steel from corrosion, soil moisture, weather exposure, and long-term outdoor conditions.

Available Lengths

100UC 14.8 galvanised H posts are available in multiple lengths so the correct post can be matched to wall height, footing depth, soil conditions, post spacing, surcharge load, and engineering requirements. The total post length must allow for both the visible wall height above ground and the required embedment depth below ground.

Post Length Typical Use
400mm Very low garden edging, small sleeper transitions, and custom low-height retaining wall details.
600mm Low garden beds, shallow retaining sections, and small landscape walls where limited retained height is required.
800mm Low retaining walls, edging walls, and short residential wall sections requiring a stronger steel post than timber alternatives.
1200mm Small to medium residential retaining walls where additional embedment depth is required.
1600mm Common residential retaining wall applications where a 100UC H-beam is preferred over a standard C-channel post.
2000mm General concrete sleeper retaining wall projects requiring greater footing depth and improved lateral support.
2400mm Taller residential wall sections, stepped blocks, and sites where deeper embedment is required.
2800mm Higher retaining wall sections where post depth, soil loading, and engineering requirements need careful allowance.
3200mm More demanding retaining wall applications, deeper footing requirements, and engineered residential wall designs.
3600mm Longest listed 100UC option for deep embedment, taller wall layouts, and engineer-specified retaining wall systems.

Technical Overview

A 100UC 14.8 H post is a Universal Column steel section used to support concrete sleeper retaining walls. The H-shaped profile allows sleepers to sit inside the post flange on both sides, making it ideal for middle posts in straight retaining wall runs. This gives each bay of sleepers a strong steel support point and helps transfer lateral earth pressure through the post and into the concrete footing.

The 100UC 14.8 section is commonly used as an entry-level H-beam specification where a C-channel post is not suitable, but a heavier 150UC or 200UC post is not required. It is often selected for low to medium residential walls, reactive clay conditions, tighter post spacing, and jobs where the retaining wall needs more strength than a basic end-post arrangement.

Post selection should always consider retained height, soil type, surcharge load, drainage, sleeper thickness, post centres, and footing size. For walls over 1.0m, walls supporting fences, driveways, sloping ground, structures, or heavy clay soils, a structural engineer should confirm the correct post size, footing depth, and post spacing.

When to Use 100UC H Posts

  • Straight wall runs: Use 100UC H posts between sleeper bays where the wall continues in a straight line.
  • Middle post locations: H posts support sleepers on both sides, making them the correct section for internal wall bays.
  • Low to medium retaining walls: Suitable where a stronger post than a C-channel is required but the wall does not need a heavier 150UC or 200UC section.
  • Reactive soil sites: Useful where ground movement or clay soil increases retaining wall loading.
  • Closer post spacing: Can be used in designs where closer post centres are required for additional wall control.
  • Engineer-specified jobs: Use 100UC posts when the engineering design nominates a 100UC 14.8 section.

100UC vs 150UC H Posts

The 100UC 14.8 is the lighter H-beam option and is typically used for lower retaining walls or projects where H-beam strength is required without moving into a heavy-duty steel section. A 150UC post provides greater stiffness and section capacity, making it more suitable for taller walls, higher surcharge loads, heavier clay conditions, and more demanding engineered retaining wall designs.

If the wall is low, the soil is stable, and surcharge loads are minimal, 100UC may be suitable when confirmed by the wall design. If the wall is taller, supporting a fence, close to a driveway, or retaining heavy clay, a heavier post specification may be required.

H Posts vs C-Channel Posts

H posts and C-channel posts serve different roles in a concrete sleeper retaining wall. A C-channel post holds sleepers on one side only and is often used at wall ends, low walls, or simple retaining wall applications. An H post holds sleepers on both sides, making it the correct post for the middle sections of a continuous wall run.

The H profile also provides greater stiffness than a comparable C-channel post, which is why H posts are commonly used for taller walls, heavier soils, surcharge loads, and engineered retaining wall designs.

Installation Considerations

Correct installation is critical for retaining wall performance. 100UC H posts should be set plumb, aligned accurately, spaced to match the sleeper length, and embedded into concrete footings designed for the wall height and soil conditions. Poor alignment can make sleeper installation difficult and may create visible gaps, uneven wall lines, or unnecessary stress in the wall system.

The footing must be sized to resist overturning and lateral pressure from the retained soil. As a general rule, taller retaining walls require longer posts and deeper embedment. Footing diameter, footing depth, concrete strength, post spacing, and embedment depth should always follow the engineering design where one is supplied.

Drainage must also be installed behind the wall. A correct drainage system normally includes free-draining aggregate, geotextile fabric, and slotted agricultural pipe at the base of the wall discharging to a legal outlet. Poor drainage can increase hydrostatic pressure behind the sleepers and may lead to wall movement, leaning, cracking, or failure.

Benefits of Galvanised Steel H Posts

  • Hot-dip galvanised protection: Helps protect the steel from corrosion, soil moisture, and outdoor exposure.
  • Strong H-beam profile: Provides support on both sides of the post for continuous concrete sleeper wall runs.
  • Termite resistant: Steel is not affected by termites, borers, or other insects.
  • Fire resistant: Galvanised steel offers better fire resistance than timber retaining wall posts.
  • Long service life: Designed for permanent outdoor retaining wall construction.
  • Multiple lengths: Available in short and long options to suit low walls, stepped walls, and deeper footing requirements.
