Galvanised Steel C Posts – 100mm 100PFC

Galvanised Steel C Posts – 100mm 100PFC are used in concrete sleeper retaining wall systems where a strong, durable, and easy-to-install steel post is required. Also known as C-channel posts or PFC retaining wall posts, these galvanised steel posts are commonly used for wall ends, low retaining walls, garden walls, boundary walls, and straight retaining wall sections where the sleeper is supported from one side of the post.

Manufactured from galvanised steel, the 100PFC C Post provides long-term protection against outdoor exposure, soil moisture, corrosion, termites, insects, and fire. It is a practical steel post option for concrete sleeper retaining walls where a lighter post section is suitable and the wall design does not require a heavier H-beam or UC post.

Available Lengths

100PFC galvanised C posts are available in a wide range of lengths so the correct post can be selected for the finished wall height, footing depth, site levels, sleeper length, soil conditions, and engineering requirements. The total post length must allow for both the visible retaining wall height above ground and the required embedment depth below ground.

Post Length Typical Use
400mm Very low garden edging, small sleeper transitions, and low landscape wall details.
600mm Low garden beds, shallow retaining sections, and small landscaping projects.
800mm Low residential retaining walls, edging walls, and short wall sections.
1200mm Small retaining walls where extra embedment depth is required below the visible wall height.
1600mm Common low to medium residential retaining walls in suitable ground conditions.
2000mm General concrete sleeper retaining wall projects where a C-channel post is suitable.
2400mm Medium wall sections where additional post length is needed for footing embedment.
2800mm Higher wall sections where site conditions still allow a 100PFC C-channel specification.
3200mm Longer C-post applications, stepped wall sections, and designs requiring deeper embedment.
3600mm Longest listed 100PFC C-post option for deep embedment and engineer-approved retaining wall layouts.

Technical Overview

A 100PFC C Post is a galvanised Parallel Flange Channel section used to support concrete sleepers from one side of the post. This makes it especially useful for retaining wall ends, boundary terminations, small garden walls, and low retaining wall sections where a full H-beam middle post is not required.

The C-shaped channel profile allows concrete sleepers to slide into the post opening, creating a neat and practical wall end or single-sided retaining wall support. For continuous straight wall runs where sleepers need to be supported on both sides of the post, an H-beam post is generally used instead.

Post selection should always consider retained height, soil type, drainage, footing size, post spacing, surcharge load, and whether the wall supports a fence, driveway, structure, or sloping ground above. For walls over 1.0m, clay soil sites, surcharge conditions, or engineer-specified projects, confirm whether a heavier H-beam post is required.

When to Use 100PFC C Posts

  • Wall ends: C posts are commonly used at the start and end of concrete sleeper retaining wall runs.
  • Low retaining walls: Suitable for many low garden and residential retaining wall applications where the design allows a C-channel post.
  • Garden beds: A practical post option for raised garden beds, planter walls, and landscape edging.
  • Boundary walls: Useful for simple boundary retaining walls where post type and footing depth are suitable for the retained height.
  • Single-sided support: The C-channel profile supports sleepers from one side of the post.
  • Cost-conscious projects: A practical option where a lighter C-post section is suitable and a heavier H-beam is not required.

C Posts vs H Posts

C posts and H posts are used for different roles in concrete sleeper retaining wall systems. A C post supports sleepers on one side only, making it suitable for wall ends and some low-wall applications. An H post supports sleepers on both sides, making it the correct post type for middle bays where the wall continues from one sleeper bay into the next.

For lower walls in stable ground, C posts may be a practical and cost-effective option. For taller walls, reactive clay sites, surcharge loads, fence-over-wall applications, driveways, or engineer-specified designs, H posts are generally preferred because they provide greater stiffness and support.

Installation Considerations

Correct installation is critical for retaining wall performance. 100PFC C posts should be set plumb or to the required back lean, spaced to suit the selected concrete sleeper length, and embedded into concrete footings sized for the wall height and soil conditions.

The footing must be deep and wide enough to resist lateral earth pressure from the retained soil. As wall height increases, the required post length, footing depth, footing diameter, and concrete volume usually increase as well. Where engineering drawings are supplied, always follow the specified post size, post spacing, footing depth, and concrete strength.

Drainage should always be installed behind the wall. A suitable retaining wall drainage system normally includes free-draining aggregate, geotextile fabric, and slotted agricultural pipe at the base of the wall discharging to a legal outlet. Poor drainage can increase hydrostatic pressure behind the sleepers and may lead to movement, leaning, cracking, or wall failure.

Benefits of Galvanised 100PFC C Posts

  • Galvanised protection: Helps protect the steel from corrosion, soil moisture, and outdoor exposure.
  • Practical C-channel profile: Designed to support concrete sleepers from one side of the post.
  • Strong steel construction: Provides a more durable post option than timber in ground-contact retaining wall applications.
  • Termite resistant: Steel is not affected by termites, borers, or other insects.
  • Fire resistant: Galvanised steel provides better fire resistance than timber retaining wall posts.
  • Multiple lengths: Available in short and long options to suit low walls, garden walls, stepped sections, and deeper footing requirements.
  • Low maintenance: No timber treatment, staining, or regular replacement is required.
