Drainage Kit for Retaining Walls

Drainage Kit for Retaining Walls

Water is the number one enemy of any retaining wall. Without proper drainage, hydrostatic pressure builds up behind the wall, causing bowing, cracking, and eventual failure — no matter how strong your sleepers and posts are. Our Drainage Kit for Retaining Walls is the professional solution to manage water behind your wall and protect your investment for decades.

Before installation, read our retaining wall drainage guide — it covers correct ag pipe placement, geotextile fabric installation, weep hole spacing, and the most common drainage mistakes that cause walls to fail prematurely.

What's Included?

  • Ag pipe (agricultural drainage pipe) — perforated flexible pipe that collects and channels groundwater away from the wall base
  • Geotextile filter sock — wraps the ag pipe to prevent soil ingress and blockage over time
  • Drainage aggregate / blue metal — coarse gravel backfill that allows water to flow freely to the ag pipe (quantity varies by kit size)
  • End caps and connectors — for clean termination and connection of drainage runs

Why Drainage Is Non-Negotiable

  • Prevents hydrostatic pressure — the leading cause of retaining wall failure in Australia
  • Required by most councils — drainage behind retaining walls is mandated in most Australian states for walls over 600mm. Check your local retaining wall permit requirements before you build.
  • Protects your sleepers and posts — reduces moisture exposure and extends the life of all wall components
  • Easy to install — lay ag pipe at the base of the wall during construction, backfill with aggregate, and you're done

Installation Tips

  • Place ag pipe at the base of the wall, sloping to a discharge point (minimum 1:100 fall)
  • Wrap in geotextile sock before backfilling with aggregate
  • Backfill with 20mm blue metal or drainage aggregate for at least 300mm behind the wall
  • Ensure discharge point is clear of structures and directs water away from the site
